Where Virtual Desktops Meet Real Business November 2009

Leostream News & Events for November 2009

This fall we've seen considerably more interest in virtual desktops as this market heats up. Here at Leostream, we've been steadily adding functionality to the Broker based on customer and marketplace demand.

With the recent release of the Connection Broker 6.2, we've added installation support (a new virtual appliance) for Hyper-V and full virtual desktop support for Microsoft virtualization. Now, the Connection Broker can be used to build out VDI in a Microsoft environment. Download a trial copy here.

In recent news and press, Network World named the Connection Broker a "Hot New Technology for the Virtual World," we formalized our long-standing support for IGEL with a partnership announcement, and Leostream's Eric Hanselman discusses security considerations for virtual desktops in ChannelPro.

We're interested in your feedback to help our product team plan iPhone integration. A (very) short, two question survey is available here. We'd be grateful if you'd consider filling it in. And finally, check out our key VDI considerations "Tip Sheet," intended as a brief guide for planning large-scale VDI deployments.

Leostream Releases Connection Broker 6.2

With the release of the Connection Broker 6.2, we've rounded out our support for Microsoft virtualization. 6.2 facilitates the creation of a complete, scalable virtual desktop infrastructure for Microsoft Server 2008 R2 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008. In addition, we've included end-user features for complete, "last-mile" functionality that creates an optimal experience for VDI end-users, including support for:

In addition, the Connection Broker's powerful policy capabilities are now natively available in Microsoft environments.

Leostream iPhone Survey

We're formulating plans for iPhone integration and have put together a very short, two question survey. We'd greatly appreciate your input! You can take it here. As always, your comments on the Connection Broker and future product direction in general are welcome. Please direct these to our product team. And many thanks for your input.

Network World Counts the Connection Broker as a Hot New Technology for the Virtual World

Network World recently named the Connection Broker 6.2 as a "hot technology for the virtual world." According to Network World, "6.2 allows users to create a virtual desktop infrastructure with Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization platform. The software, which already supported VMware, Citrix, and other virtualization products, ties desktop images in the data center to users' thin clients, laptops, workstations, or Web interfaces . . ."

ChannelPro Magazine: Virtual Desktop Security - Simply Complex

Improved security is one of the major benefits of VDI. This includes desktop centralization, removing data from the vulnerable "edges" of the network, hardening access control via policies, and others. And while VDI can decrease the security risks associated with end user computing, it also introduces new complexities that can wreak havoc on a company's security stance if they aren't planned for in advance.

Eric Hanselman, Leostream director of professional and technical services, discusses some of these risks, how to avoid them, and steps you can take to plan a highly secure VDI for your organization.

Leostream Now Included in IGEL Windows Embedded Standard Firmware

IGEL recently announced that it will be including the Connection Broker in its Windows Embedded Standard (WES) firmware. The combined solution gives IGEL customers the ability to deploy and manage Windows virtual desktops with the Connection Broker. This combined solution marries Leostream's flexibility and scalability with IGEL clients using Standard and Advanced firmware feature packs.

The integration of the Leostream client in IGEL's linux firmware is planned for December 2009.

451 Group analyst Rachel Chalmers discusses the merits of the Leostream Broker, saying "the special magic Leostream brings to server-hosted desktop virtualization is support for many hypervisors, delivery models, back ends, protocols, in-place components and clients. To put it another way, it's the perfect choice when all you need is a connection broker that will drop in and play nicely with the datacenter, virtualization and desktop infrastructure you already have."
